How to get an alert when a carrier's phone, email or address changes

Updated 2026-10-12. For brokers, shippers and anyone who keeps a carrier list. Every outside fact links its source.

The question: is there a way to be told when the phone number, email or address on a carrier's FMCSA record changes? Here is the free way first, then what we built.

The free way: FMCSA's own records

SAFER Company Snapshot. SAFER shows a carrier's phone, physical address and mailing address, with the date the information is current as of. It does not show the email address. FMCSA tells brokers to confirm a carrier's phone number in SAFER, and if the number you were given does not match, to "call the number posted in SAFER" (FMCSA: Broker and Carrier Fraud and Identity Theft).

Company Census File. FMCSA's free Company Census File on data.transportation.gov has the phone, cell phone, email address, physical address and mailing address for each USDOT number. You can search it or download it at no cost, and the page shows when FMCSA last updated it.

Comparing by hand. Save each carrier's phone, email and addresses when you onboard it, then compare them with SAFER or the census file each time you book. It works, and it costs nothing but time.

What we could not find: an FMCSA service that emails you when another company's record changes. FMCSA's fraud guidance points you to SAFER to check the record yourself (FMCSA). Without a tool, catching a change means checking again.

What a change does and doesn't mean

Carriers update their own records for ordinary reasons: they move, change dispatchers, or update their MCS-150 registration. A changed phone or email is not by itself a sign that anything is wrong. It is a reason to confirm through a second channel before you book, for example a number from older paperwork or the carrier's insurance agent.

A change shows up only after the carrier files it and FMCSA publishes it. Nothing, including Carrier Ledger, can see an email or phone number someone uses that is not on the FMCSA record.

What Carrier Ledger adds

Carrier Ledger reads the same Company Census File for every carrier on your watchlist each day, after FMCSA publishes it. The first read records how each record looks that day. From then on you get an alert when the phone, cell phone, email, physical address, mailing address, legal name or listed company officers change, showing the old value, the new value and the date we saw it. The carrier's page marks the change for 30 days, with a link to the FMCSA file it came from.

The same watch also covers authority status, insurance and bond filings and suspension notices. Alerts come by email or a private RSS feed on every plan, and by Slack, Microsoft Teams or webhook on Pro and Team.

The free plan watches 5 carriers. Pro is $29/month for 250 carriers, with a 14-day free trial. It is a monitoring aid, not a vetting decision. Check your carriers free See plans
